  • Breast: Typically all white meat, chicken breast is the most common type of chicken meat used in recipes. It can be bone-in or boneless.
  • Thigh: This cut is typically dark meat and has a higher fat content. It can be used interchangeably with chicken breast and can also be bone-in or boneless.
  • Drumstick: A cheaper cut that mostly consists of dark meat. It is usually baked in a sauce or glazed and eaten as-is.
  • Wings: Wings are typically white meat and often enjoyed as a standalone dish.

Which is the best cut of chicken for recipes?

Personally, I prefer using chicken breasts due to their lower fat content and ease of shredding. Additionally, chicken breast is considered the healthiest part of the chicken because it has lower calories and fat. However, chicken thighs are just as easy to work with and can sometimes be more affordable.

A 4-oz chicken breast contains approximately 35 grams of protein and 4 grams of fat, while 4 oz of chicken thigh contains around 27 grams of protein and 10 grams of fat.

How big is a chicken breast?

The size of boneless chicken breasts can vary. Smaller ones tend to be around 8 to 12 ounces, while larger ones can reach up to 1.5 pounds. On average, a chicken breast weighs about 7-8 ounces.

One easy method to determine the weight is to buy a family pack, where you can see the number of pounds of chicken breasts. Alternatively, you can use a food scale for precise measurements. As a general rule of thumb, consider 2 small chicken breasts to be approximately one pound of meat.

How many cups are in a pound of chicken?

When following certain recipes, you might come across a call for cooked and shredded chicken. However, it may not provide the exact amount of meat needed to achieve the desired result.

In general, one pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts equals approximately 3 cups of chicken. This amount is enough for around 4 servings, as the average serving size is 3/4 cup of chicken per person.

What’s the easiest way to cook and shred chicken?

My go-to method for cooking chicken is using a slow cooker. It’s perfect for lean meats like chicken or tougher cuts of meat such as beef roast. Simply place the chicken (fresh or frozen) at the bottom of the slow cooker and add one cup of water. Let it cook for 6-7 hours on the low setting.

If you’re short on time and have frozen chicken, an Instant Pot or pressure cooker can come to your rescue. Place the chicken at the bottom, add at least one cup of water, and cook for 10-14 minutes, depending on the thickness and size of the chicken. After cooking, allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes, then manually release the remaining pressure.

To shred the chicken, you can use two forks or even a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. The stand mixer method takes only about 30 seconds and yields perfectly shredded chicken.

What is the serving size of chicken per person?

A standard single serving size is typically 3-4 ounces of meat, roughly the size of the palm of your hand or a deck of cards.

So, one pound of raw chicken breasts would equal approximately 3-4 servings.

What can I do with extra chicken?
