Reading Time: 4 minutes
Velveeta cheese is a convenient cheese product that we’re all a little afraid to admit to loving. Whether it’s a guilty pleasure for you or a regular part of your lunchtime routine, have you considered whether Velveeta is freezable?
How to Freeze Velveeta Cheese
Before you grab a packet of Velveeta and carelessly toss it into the freezer, it might be a good idea to read our full method as it’s not quite that simple:
- Remove from Packaging: Remove it from its original packaging. If it’s entirely sealed, you can place that directly into the freezer, but you will likely still get better results by unwrapping it and then rewrapping it.
- Wrap: Once the cheese is removed from the packaging, wrap it in a layer of permeable paper. The best choices for this are food-safe options such as baking paper or butcher’s paper. Ensure that this layer of paper is loose.
- Wrap Again: Once the paper layer is wrapped around the cheese, follow that with a layer of cling film. The cling film must be wrapped a little more tightly than the paper but not so tight as to crush everything into a solid brick – you’re looking to ensure a complete, sealed layer of cling film.
- Freeze: Move it to the freezer, making sure to place it in the centre of the freezer so that the risk of a freezer burn being transmitted through a point of contact is significantly lowered.
The double-wrapping method significantly delays freezer burn by ensuring that any frost and ice first form on the baking paper layer rather than on the food itself – that ensures that freezer burn is delayed, as freezer burn comes from frost and ice coming into direct contact with the food in question.

Expect Textural ChangesThe texture of Velveeta cheese is a little hard to describe. However, we can describe that it will likely become more crumbly after a bit in the freezer. The reason is that the cheese’s water content will freeze into ice crystals, while the fat and protein won’t. Therefore, it will separate a little, changing in texture ever so slightly.
Keep in the Centre of Your FreezeStoring Velveeta cheese in the centre of your freezer is ideal since it will allow for the least temperature variation in the cheese itself. This is handy, as it prevents the cheese from thawing and refreezing a little over time, which would greatly damage the outermost layer of cheese.
Label It ClearlyMost cheese can look like one another once it has frozen. If you don’t want to accidentally thaw cheddar when you want Velveeta or vice versa, then ensure you include a clear label on the packet.
How Long Can You Freeze Velveeta Cheese?
You can freeze Velveeta cheese for up to three months. After that point, freezer burn will have taken place, and it will no longer be ideal for eating.
As it is full of preservatives, it will keep for quite a long time in the fridge so you have to question whether freezing it is really worth it at all?
How Do You Defrost Velveeta Cheese?
The simplest way to defrost Velveeta cheese is to transfer it to your fridge overnight. This will allow the ice crystals to thaw, while also allowing for the cheese to remain at a food-safe temperature.

It’s not a good idea to try and speed this process up as you will find the texture ruined further.
Can You Refreeze Velveeta Cheese?
Technically, yes, though we would advise against it.
As you thaw and refreeze Valveeta repeatedly, the texture will lose more and more cohesion. To that end, only freezing and thawing what you need allows for the best, easiest-to-use, texture.
Does Velveeta Cheese Freeze Well?
Not particularly, no – Velveeta cheese can develop a grainy texture after it has been frozen, which isn’t ideal. However, if you were going to melt the cheese, for example, it wouldn’t matter that much.
It all comes down to how you’re going to use it. This is often the case with cheese. You wouldn’t want to serve it up, on its own, raw.
